After the mainstream media discovered Arnold in the mid-70s, Hollywood began seeing muscle as a ‘new thing’ they could drop in as a gimmick in various properties. On TV, we got actual bodybuilding-themed episodes on shows like ‘Hart to Hart’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels’. Movies employed muscle typically as a sight-gag of sorts, and the Barbarian Brothers came along, in the early 80s, at the perfect time to provide larger-than-life background characters in various comedies. By this time, cable was widespread, and I recall watching hours of dumb flicks while visiting home over breaks from school. Once in a while, you’d have a muscle scene pop up out of nowhere, and I’d make note of so I could plan a rewatch when the movie played again hours later.
Two of the best that I recall from that era are shown here, both featuring the Barbarian Barothers. ‘The Money Pit’ was a lame remake of ‘Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House’, one of those flicks you watch inattentively while doing something else. Fortunately, my eyes were fixed on the screen during the arrival of the work crew here, featuring the Barbarians riding up on motorcycles, then one being having his hulking torso oiled up, both front and back, by a chick in the background. The delicious spectacle only lasts a few seconds, but it lingered in my memory ever after.
The second film was much better, ‘The Flamingo Kid’, a serio-comic coming of age story with Matt Dillon working as a valet at a Long Island seaside resort. The Barbarians play the club’s twin lifeguards as oafish stereotypes, but they have a few scenes (all included here) that nicely display their development. Wearing revealing tanks that blend with their deeply tanned skin, they provide us generous shots of their physiques, with an especially impressive double-bi from one of them as an introduction.
To finish up, we’re back to TV and an episode of ‘Knight Rider’, in which the big boys are cast as bullying, lunkhead minions to the villain of the week. They’re covered up through most of the show, but their final scene in which they’re dispatched by the hero, shows them tantalizingly sweaty in tanks that showcase their thick upper bodies.
Until the expansion of online video, I had thought I’d never see these brief snippets of muscle eye-candy again and would have to rely on my lustful memories., so it’s fun to be able to enjoy them again and at length.
