Just as aging movie stars had donned ‘love-beads’ in the late 60s in desperation of looking ‘hip’ and staying relevant, Hollywood and the media in general spent the 70s trying to capitalize on every emerging trend burped up by the zeitgeist. It might start with a feature story on the local news, but soon you’d see sketches on the variety shows of the day, and eventually, whole episodes of sitcoms and cop shows dedicated to the new contemporary craze of the moment. Those of us who lived through it all still wince painfully at memories of disco-dancing on ‘Maude’ and roller-skating on ‘CHIPS’.
Bodybuilding, thrust into the public eye with the sudden ubiquity of Arnold on the talk show circuit after ‘Stay Hungry’ and ‘Pumping Iron’, was no exception. One of the earliest manifestations was this routine from ‘Mitzi and 100 Guys’ in 1975. Mitzi Gaynor, a veteran of several 50s musicals, most notably ‘South Pacific’ had established a track record for lavish TV specials, so this was an ‘event’ that my family dutifully watched.
Most of the show consisted of the typical overblown production numbers of the day, then this bit kicked off. I can’t say much in favor of this arrangement of ‘Always’, but the ‘chorus boys’ are the sweetest eye candy you could desire. I tried to shrink into my chair as my parents made inane comments. All I wanted to do was absorb the incredible images I was witnessing on-screen. Until the advent of the internet, I never harbored any hopes of seeing it again. In fact, it had slipped from memory. Eventually, the rediscovery of similar scenes brought back …
Many such videos are tarnished with the passage of time, no longer measuring up to the memories we have of them (think Denny Miller flexing on ‘Gilligan’, not so big as one recalls). This one still hits hard, and though one might wish for clearer resolution, the exquisite assemblage of physiques here is nearly intoxicating. Accustomed to seeing more flesh, some may carp at the jumpsuits obscuring much of the ‘goods’, but their body-hugging uniformity accentuates their individuality, forcing us to focus on their diversely attractive faces, their contemporary hairstyles & 70s facial hair, and, most rewardingly, their awesome, bulging arms, which they repeatedly flex for our enjoyment.
Though I didn’t know them when I saw this as a young adolescent, my diligent study of the mags a few years later forever etched most of their names into my mind. I love how all 9 of them (like the muses of myth?) line up to flex @ 1:39. In order, we get 1) unknown guy, maybe ‘Big Tony’ from ‘Pumping Iron’; 2) Dan Howard, lesser-known but scrumptiously huge here; 3) Don Peters, dreamy as ever; 4) unknown guy, possibly Ron Dippolito, if I read the caption right; 5) Ric Drasin, looking especially sexy; 6) unknown guy, but gorgeous, the first man we saw at the start, and I’d love to see more; 7) Bob Birdsong, one of my faves ‘back in the day’, and still triggering me now, combining youthful innocence with sexy muscle in an incendiary mix; 8) Kent Kuehn, unmistakable with his distinctive 70s style, but his body always awesome upon closer examination; 9) unknown, seemingly younger guy. Like the most enticing smorgasbord, they all look quite tasty!
