This one is admittedly weird & silly, but, considering the recent spate of AI videos we’ve seen, I’m plunging ahead in posting it.
Back in the 60s, Hanna-Barbera churned out tons of cartoons for TV, including some light adventures, even their own attempts at superheroes. One of these was ‘Sinbad Jr.’, which entailed a young man sailing the seas accompanied by an intelligent, chatty parrot, encountering various monsters or other challenges. The episodes were short, consisting of a brief scene-setting, a problem suddenly arising that results in the hero being temporarily incapacitated, and finally, the now empowered hero coming back to triumph.
What made it special was that the hero possessed a ‘magic belt’ that endowed him with super-strength when he tugged on it (let’s forgo the implications of that just now). Most pertinent to our purposes was that he didn’t just get strong, his upper body grew huge and muscular. Unlike the Popeye cartoons, we didn’t just get a quick arm flex. Sinbad’s whole torso blew up BIG as he’d hit a massive double-bi. I believe I saw some episodes when I was VERY young, as they had faded from memory before some local channel began showing them much later when I was in college.
Of course, by then, I was fully immersed in my adulation of muscle, and I realized that I retained vestigial memories of having seen this character when quite young, simmering within my subconscious. I can’t help wondering how those images helped to spark nascent interest in strength & muscle. This likely led to my affection for certain superheroes (the muscular, speedo-clad Submariner, for one), and, eventually, in puberty, for real-life bodybuilders, but also, to my enduring fascination for the muscular transformation itself. Sinbad’s metamorphosis predates my discovery of any other muscular growth that would late enthrall me in comics, etc. So, indeed, this obscure cartoon character may well have been among the foundational cornerstones of my sexual identity.
There are numerous episodes online, and, while the settings change, the storylines are much the same, culminating with Sinbad powering up and flexing before resolving the episode’s crisis with his immense strength. The selection I’m posting here is unique in one aspect. This episode is the only one I’ve seen that depicts Sinbad shirtless and wearing swimming trunks, in lieu of his typical t-shirt & pants, so we get to see more exposed cartoon flesh. Sadly, the resolution is not good enough to promise nipples.
